Not the same 'ole MAC!

I began my MAC addiction about 10 years ago, but things got really "bad" in about 2005 when my ex was deployed. I needed something to occupy my time and thoughts. Now, when I say "bad", I mean I would spend hundreds of dollars at the store or online every week. Yes, I was a junkie and proud of it. I haven't counted lately, but I'd say I have close to 130-150 MAC shadows alone, not counting the countless other cosmetic brands.

Recently I have been noticing that the color pay-off has not been the same between the old MAC shadows and the newer MAC shadows. I have not officially heard anything released by MAC stating such, but I believe the proof is in the pudding.

Below you will see unedited photo two swatches. Both swatches were swiped a total of four-times each. No, they are not different colors. They are MAC's "Plum Dressing" eyeshadow. The swatch to the left came from a pan purchased in '05 or '06, whereas the pan on the right was purchased a few months ago.

That is an extremely noticable difference in color pay-off, even to the untrained artist-eye! I have found the new formulas to be not as easily blendable and lack the "wow" factor for which MAC has built a reputation on. Needless to say, I found this to be very disappointing and I can not help but feel somewhat cheated. Being a MAC customer for years, I have come to expect a certain unparalelled quality in their cosmetic products... Guess their downfall is where other cosmetic companies begin their rise. ;)

I don't own nearly as many as you haha. I own 5 shadows. lol. But I must say that when I first got into MAC back in 05, I loved everything I got - nothing disappointed me. Now, it seems things are very bland and I am not sure why. I'm look elsewhere for products. I think MAC has established itself enough on addictive packaging and loyal return customers that it can afford to reduce the pigmentation in their products. Not saying that's good, but we'll see. In the mean time, I've been looking elsewhere.

I was just discussing that. Their shadows have been very disappointing as of late. I can't get any good color pay off even with a good primer. They are so dry and hard to blend. I feel I have wasted so much money. I really used to love them. I am not a make up artist. Just an everyday makeup lover and user.

ooh that IS disappointing! maybe since they're so publicized and popular now they think they can get away with these things =/.

I've heard of this but this is the first time I see the difference. Very disappointing!

PS- I'd love to win anything from HHC lmao

So upsetting and disappointing. Everytime I come in contact with someone asking me if MAC is #1 for me, I discuss this exact thing so they know! It gets me wild knowing they do this and still have the success they do! SMH. Love ya girl for all your hard work! :)

I had heard of this happening but have never "seen" it until now. Sucks!

PS- I'd love to win some HHC LOL

Oh my lord! That difference is huge! How disappointing! I have to say, I *like* their shadows, but I don't really *love* them. There are a couple that I wouldn't mind having, but I'm more into their liners and whatnot.

MAC... fail.

Yes, Ive noticed this too. Not only with MAC but with other cosmetics. It seems like companies these days just want to make the product at the least cost and sell at the highest price.

I already told you on twitter how I felt about it. I had a feeling that the formulas changed, and this just proves what I was thinking. Yet another reason not to love MAC anymore :(

I remember when I was on a modeling website that the MUA's were boycotting MAC for those reasons you just mentioned. The quality going down, the collection gimmicks, and prices going up.

They discussed how it used to be geared more towards makeup artists and blamed the turn towards the public and shooting up in popularity with the regular consumer for the changes in quality.

That was two or three years back, so it's been going on for some time.

Wow! What a difference! You would think a company as big as MAC would put an effort into their established products instead of coming up with new collections/products all the time. Goes to show they are all bout the money, not the client or the products.

That's interesting. I'm not a big MAC fan, can't comment on this, but great to know

Its not to surprising that MAC would start loosing their trademark "WOW" factor. Look at all these other companies coming out with bigger & better colors. They've spent too much time getting celeb's to sell the product not the customers.

The change began to occur when MAC was bought out by Estee Lauder. They have been changing all the formulas since then.

Its not the customers that created the problem. Its Estee Lauder and their using cockimany and unfair promotional tactics to demean the worth of make up artists work and shove them out of jobs.

Side note(F.Y.I. I'm a make up artist)

Use Yaby eyeshadows they're better. And a ton of great PRO MUAs use them. (yes I do too)

Just look through yabycosmetics.com
